Conservative GOP Senator Rob Portman Senator recently changed his position on same-sex marriage when his son came out as gay. This is notable because he was in the forefront in the campaign supporting Mitt Romney's 2012 Presidential run. While someone of this prominence reversing their position is good news, I still feel that the subjective and personal nature of his decision simply highlights the problem in gaining wider acceptance of LGBTQ lifestyles.
Dick Cheney as the highest ranking Republican with a homosexual child, is another outlier in this debate. Supporting same-sex rights shouldn't depend on having a gay family member; it's selfish to base political decisions, particularly for people in power, on personal stake in the issue.
